3 billion Apps downloaded from Apple

3,000,000,000
Now that’s a lot of zeros and it’s the number of downloads that Apple has faciliatated through the Apple App Store. Let’s not forget that the iTunes Store exceeded 5 billion songs downloaded but those are songs and apps are the software/widgets that you can download to your iPhone to have fun and frolics with (and sometimes increase your productivity).
This news has just come with two days before the start of CES and this figure has surprised many because it was fewer than 100 days ago that Apple announced they had reached 2 billion App downloads.
The stats are staggering with the US iTunes App Store having 125,000+ apps available compared to the ‘competition’ – Google Androids Market has around 20,000 and the Blackberry Stores has about 5,000 apps.
Apps seem to have been the golden bullet to success for iPhone sales last year and Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, “Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before”.
So what does the future hold for apps? More developers entering the market? More viruses? More useful/useless mini applications? Apple’s competition catching up?

I just recently got an iPhone and am figuring out all of the apps. There’s just so many. It’s great though and I love the fact that there’s so many fun and serious apps at the Apple App Store.
I went with the Blackberry although deciding between the bold and the iPhone was a tough decision. I am jealous of the big screen and lots of apps but love the keyboard on my Blackberry. “RIM get some more apps!”
